31-day sugar detox

Out with the old…

Day 5And, go!  Slept like a rock last night as my energy has definitely dipped as my blood sugar is stabilizing.  At this house, we are certainly feeling the effects of abstinence.  It’s amazing how aware I’m becoming to my body, albeit I am foggy!  We don’t feel good — but I knew that was expected and thus I’m rolling with it.  I felt pretty good 2 nights ago and yesterday morning and then right around mid-afternoon a fabulously yucky headache set it and the rest of the night was “blah”.  Interesting, though, because I didn’t feel sick.  We cooked a lovely dinner and I ate about half and was pleasantly surprised that I was done.  I didn’t feel full, but I felt satisfied.  Mind you…I pretty much always finish my meal.  The last 5 days have been interesting as my blood sugar is not having ups and downs, I am eating much more mindfully and without cravings.

See, that’s the real point of a sugar detox.  Let your body and your brain get back to the workings it’s supposed to have.  When we eat too much crap (not only in respect to sugar, but also alcohol, and also chemical sh1t ingredients…have you been looking at the ingredient lists?) our bodies just cannot work properly.  And, considering everything is connected then we cannot work properly.  This includes our bodies AND our brains.  We then become accustomed to going about our day in a modified version of our true selves.  We become accustomed to being sub-par.

So…is it worth it?  I think so.  In fact, I know so.  As I previously mentioned in some past posts…about week 3 I become so clear-headed that I vow that I will never eat sugar again and will abstain from alcohol forever!  Seriously, that is how good and different I feel.  But, that is not realistic and thus I hope each time I detox that I will learn something more about myself and my habits so that I can find that balance.  The balance that allows me to rarely go over the recommended amount of sugar in a day (p.s. that number is LOW — only 5 to 10 tsp of added sugar…regardless if it’s honey, raw sugar or processed in your food) and keeping my alcohol intake to the recommended 1 drink/per day (2 drinks/day for men).

We have this one body.  And, we’re abusing it.  We have so much out of our control that our bodies are fighting (air quality, water quality, etc.) and quite frankly we do not pay much attention to all of the other bad habits we have (too much screen time, not reading enough books, not taking enough time to quiet our minds) that if we can partake in something more tangible…like a sugar detox… we can then hopefully allow that awareness to bleed into other areas of life.  We can become more mindful of all the areas that we don’t realize are taking us away from our true selves.

Keep on keepin’ on folks!

    1. Thank you for your kind words. That degree in Journalism from way back when helps 🙂 I actually went back to school for nutrition because I was querying articles to publications and they kept telling me, “You’re not an expert.” So, I thought…what does it take to become an expert? Wouldn’t you know it that now in 2016 everyone’s an expert…hehe.
